A fire-rated roller shutter is a specially constructed and tested shutter assembly designed to help resist the spread of fire through an opening for its specified performance period when correctly installed and maintained. 

A standard roller shutter primarily provides security, access control or weather protection. A fire-rated roller shutter incorporates a tested fire-resisting design and associated components. A standard security shutter should not automatically be considered fire-rated.
