Fire curtains form part of a building’s fire strategy by deploying when activated to help restrict fire and smoke spread, maintain compartmentation and protect escape routes.

As active systems containing controls, motors, power supplies, fabric and guides, fire curtains require appropriate inspection and maintenance. Associated Smoke & Fire Products provides nationwide servicing, operational testing, fault diagnosis, repairs and installation for commercial and public-sector premises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@asfp.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A fire curtain is a deployable barrier designed to descend when activated and help restrict the spread of fire between areas of a building. When retracted, the curtain is normally concealed within a headbox above the protected opening.

During normal operation, an active fire curtain remains retracted inside its headbox. When the system receives its configured activation signal, the curtain deploys to its operational position. The exact sequence depends on the system, controls and building fire strategy.

Fire curtains can be installed across doorways, lift openings, atriums, escalators, reception areas and open-plan spaces. They are often used where fire separation is required without installing a permanent wall or conventional fire door.

Fire curtains should be inspected and serviced at planned intervals based on the manufacturer’s instructions, fire-risk assessment, building use and applicable maintenance requirements. Additional attention may be needed following an activation, reported fault, impact or building work near the curtain.

Our engineers inspect the accessible curtain assembly, fabric, guides, controls and associated components. Operational testing is completed where appropriate, and the system is checked for visible damage, obstructions or faults. Any recommended remedial work is reported.

Signs can include failure to deploy, incomplete or uneven movement, difficulty retracting, unusual noises, damaged fabric, problems with the side guides, warning indicators or failure to respond correctly to an activation signal.

Many fire-curtain faults can be repaired, depending on the system’s condition and the availability of suitable components. Replacement may be recommended when equipment is severely damaged, obsolete, unsuitable or cannot be safely restored to the required operation.
